Cheddar Cheese Bread
Ingredients
- Makes 1 loaf (16 slices)
- 1 package active dry yeast
- 1 1/4 cups warm water
- 2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese (4 oz)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons shortening
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon melted butter or margarine
Instructions
- in large mixing bowl dissolve yeast in warm water
- Add 1 2/3 cups of flour, cheese, sugar, shortening and salt
- Beat with electric mixer on low for 30 seconds scraping bowl as needed
- Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes continuing to scrape sides
- Add remaining 1 cup of flour stirring until combined
- Cover and let rise in warm place for 30 minutes
- Then stir about 25 strokes
- Spread batter evenly in a greased 1 1/2 quart glass casserole. (Loaf will eventually bake in this casserole.)
- Cover and let rise in warm place 45 minutes or until batter has doubled in size
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees
- Bake at 375 for 40-45 minutes or until golden brown
- Cover with foil the last 25 minutes to prevent top from overbrowning
- Remove the bread from the oven and brush top with melted butter or margarine
- Remove bread from casserole dish and cool on wire rack
